GUN DEATHS

Gun problems across the world! What the fuss is all about ?

In today's world, a lot has been going on in mainstream media regarding the use of the guns. Some people are in favor of Guns and some are not so much. To be able to see if both sides of the arguments are correct, we decided to look at the data and make our opinions on the basis of data itself. Avoiding political correctness at all costs, the main purpose of this website/project is telling a story related to gun deaths using visualizations and data

Data

Before we dwell into visualizations and start making assumptions we will talk a little bit about the data. The data for this particular project was gathered from various resources, primarily from: FBI, the Guardian, Mother Jones and Kaggle. Data is divided into three categories. First one is the world data, second is about shooting in the US from 2004-2016 and third is about Mass shootings the US from past 50 years

Story

The story for this project is divided into three different sub-categories just like the data. Our main focus is mainly on the US, so our story will go something along these lines:

1: Looking at the world data and comparing each country with each other, then comparing top countries on the basis of gun ownership and in the end comparing top countries on the basis of GDP and gun ownership to see where exactly the US stands.

2: The second part of our project is about looking at the general shooting statistics in the US and see how the US has done over past few years (2004-2016). We looked at the data from each state and compared shooting statistics of each and every state individually as well.

3: Third part of our project is about mass shootings that have taken place in the US over past 46 years or so (1982-2018). Comparing data on the basis of place where the mass shooting took place, guns used during those shootings and number of people got killed during that shooting

Visualizations

Up next are all the visualizations and analysis related to this data and opinions related to the trends over the years. Visualizations also allow a user interaction making it easier for anyone to hover over and communicate with the data

PART 1 : World Shooting Statistic

Below is the graph for all the countries in the world, hovering over them will give you all the necessary information related to the country. The very first graph is a bubble chart with all the countries in the world are shown on the chart, hovering over a specific bubble will give you all the necessary information related the country. However some countries have no data available, so they will having value undefined in case of gun homicides.

Bubble chart of Countries

Comparing top GDP countries

The graph above is about all the countries in the world. Scatter plot chart below is about top GDP's (industrialized countries in the world). Hovering over the circle will give you all of the necessary information related to the country. Values on x-axis show Gun homicides in these countries and value on y-axis shows guns owned in these countries. Countries compared here are the US, Japan, UK, Italy, India, Brazil, Germany, and France.

Comparing top Gun Owning countries

The Scatterplot chart below is about top gun owning countries in the world. Hovering over the circle will give you all of necessary information related to the country. Values on x-axis show Gun homicides in these countries and value on y-axis shows guns owned in these countries. A lot of information can be generated from these plots as for where exactly the US stands in terms comparison to other countries in the World. Countries covered in this part are the US, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Columbia, India, South Africa, and the Philippines.

PART 2 : Looking into the US

After looking at the whole world now, the comparison will start between different states of the US. For this part, we will be looking at all the shootings that took place in the US since the year 2003 to 2016. Data was collected from FBI. This part of the project will consist of 2 visualizations only, First visualization is a bar graph showing all the shootings since 2003-2016 took place in each and every state. The second visualization shows how many shootings, in general, took place in the US in each year to show the ongoing trend related to shooting in the US.

Looking at the states over past 14 years, (2003 - 2016)

Hovering over the below bar chart will give some information realted to the state

Lets look at the trend over past 14 years

The line chart below shows how many shootings took place in each and every year from 2003-2016, hover over the line chart to see the exact number of shootings in each year. Surprisingly this never went up in recent years. In the Year 2014 number shootings were 11825 whereas by year 2016 number of shootings rose up to 14892, a +20% in the year shootings in the US. However, we can see that the number was already on the increase since the year 2014, with 2015 also having 13252 shootings incidents.

PART 3 : Mass Shootings in US

So far we have already covered two parts of this whole analysis, which gives us an idea about how the US stands in the world today and how different states in the US are have been trending over past few years. Now, our focus will shift to the third part of this analysis and which is by far the most important analysis of this topic. Mass Shootings.

Public mass shootings account for a tiny fraction of the country’s gun deaths, but they are seemingly terrifying because they occur without warning in the most obnoxious places. Most of the victims are chosen not for what they have done but simply for where they happen to be.

Our next part of the analysis will talk about mass shootings that have taken place in different parts of United States. From shootings that took place in schools to shootings that took place in clubs. Our data does not include information and data related to gang wars and people got killed in gang shootings. This piece of the project here talks about all fatalities from mass shootings, guns used, and places where most of these mass shootings took place.

Fatalities over years (1982-2018) in mass shootings

The line chart below shows how many fatalities were there every time a mass shooting took places even though the number is quite small and there have been years in between when there we no mass shootings that took place in the US, but in recent years we can clearly see that number has been on the rise. For instance, if we look at the year 2017 there were a record number of fatalities with 117 total number of people killed. The people who were killed came from nearly every imaginable background. Their ages range from the unborn to the elderly. In addition, thousands of survivors were left with devastating injuries

Guns used and Shooters

Shooters often carried more than one weapon; one was found with 24. Most of the mass shooters’ weapons were obtained legally and some were obtained illegally

154 Shooters

Some of these mass shooters were known to have violent tendencies or criminal pasts. Others seemed largely fine until they attacked. All but 3 were male. The vast majority were between the ages of 20 and 49. More than half — 88 of them — died at or near the scene of the shooting, often by killing themselves.

Semiautomatic rifles

Semiautomatic rifles have been used in some of the country’s deadliest shootings, such as those in Newtown, Orlando, San Bernardino and Las Vegas. The AR-15, a lightweight, customizable version of the military’s M16, soared in popularity after a 10-year federal ban on assault weapons expired in 2004.

Semiautomatic handguns

The country’s most popular type of firearm, 9mm semiautomatic handguns, are used by many law enforcement officers. They are generally light and inexpensive, easy to conceal and control, and they fire as quickly as a person can pull the trigger. The gunman who killed 32 students and teachers at Virginia Tech in 2007 used a 9mm semiautomatic Glock 19 (and a .22-caliber Walther P22, another popular caliber). In this data, 9mm semiautomatic handguns show up more than any other weapon.

34 States and Districts

34 states and the District Shootings in schools and houses of worship tend to remain in highlight for a long period of time, but they make up a relatively small portion of mass shootings. More common are those in offices, restaurants and clubs. California has had more mass shootings than any other state, with 17 and also with most number of fatalities 118 in mass shootings since year 1982.

Different venues of mass shootings

Now that we have already looked at how many mass shootings have took place in the US since year 1982 in different states, now we will look at different venues where shootings took place in the US.

These venues are divided into 5 different parts

(1) Shootings in schools

(2) Shootings in religious places

(3) Shootings at work places

(4) Shootings at Miliraty bases

(5) Shootings at other places (concerts, clubs, restaurants)

ANALYSIS

After looking at all of these visualizations we will now do an in detail analysis of the project on the basis of data correctness and not worrying too much about political correctness. Our analysis will be divided into three parts all together. The first part is about the US vs Rest of the World, Second part is about analyzing different US states on the basis of state shootings data and third analysis will be done for mass shootings.

PART 1 - US VS REST OF THE WORLD

As often portrayed by the mainstream media, the US is apparently is that bad in terms of gun violence as compared to other countries around the world. Even though it ranks second in terms of countries compared in terms of GDP falling only behind Brazil, the US is still doing way better than most of the countries. We have to take a lot of things into account before stating our opinion as we are not necessarily 100% sure how legible and trustworthy the data is for other countries of the world, especially for third world countries. So in conclusion of this analysis, we will say that definitely, the US is up there in the rankings with other countries in the world, But we also have to take this thing into account that the US is also the leader of the world in terms peace, innovation, and freedom. So media's scrutiny does make more sense if you look through a different point of view.

PART 2 - COMPARING US STATES (2004-2016)

In this part of our project, we compared all 50 US states together over past 13 years of data from the year 2004 to the year 2016. For first 9 years from the year 2004-2013 we saw a downward trend as shown in line chart above. However, right after the year 2014 to the year 2016, the number of shootings incidents skyrocketed and rose by 20% in the span of 2 years. Surprisingly to our understanding, it turned out that states with toughest gun laws have the most number of shootings in past 13 years. For instance, California alone had close 27000 shootings incidents in past 13 years whereas Texas which is a Pro-Gun the state had roughly 14000 shooting incidents that took place. However even though these states have a completely different number of shooting numbers as compared with each other, we must take this thing into account that California is by far the most populous state in the US and Texas even though bigger inland but is still have still less population as compared with California. In conclusion, our current analysis would be this that, these shooting incident numbers are still higher than expected. Each and every life is valuable and people must be taught the value of life every day. As per our own personal opinions looking at the trend lines in line chart and looking at individual shootings Statistics in each state our opinion is this that stronger/stricter guns laws are necessary for every US state at this point of time. We're not against guns neither against our 2nd Amendment, As per our data visualizations we can conclude that stronger guns laws must be implemented.

PART 3 - MASS SHOOTINGS (1982-2018)

Mass shootings are really very unique and terrifying at the same time. Before we make our analysis and conclusion to answer our question, first we will clarify that mass shooting are usually shootings in which 3 or more people get killed. They are terrifying because they happen at the most mundane places without any warning. As per data and visualization we saw different places where mass shootings have taken place in the US, different Guns Used and how many fatalities were there in each year of mass shootings. Even though these numbers were relatively small, mass shootings are still a very big cause for concern. We looked at the guns that were used in these shootings and noticed how Rifles and handguns were by far the most favorite form of assault weapon used by the shooters. In our data, we also gained an insight into the shooters mental health and it turned our roughly 60% of the shooters had mental issues. In our conclusion and defense, data and visualizations gave us a solid evidence that why we're in a dire need of stricter gun laws across the US. Florida high school shooting is one prime example where shooter named Nicholas Cruz had mental issues and ended up killing 17 kids. Stephen Paddock, Las Vegas shooter also had mental issues and roughly 58 people were killed and close to 550 people were injured. These shootings are sporadic but strict gun laws and strict background check are possible solutions to these problems.
